Rijkswaterstaat has further improved traffic safety on the N33 between the N360 junction (Appingedam) and the roundabout near Googles data center (Eemshaven). The project, for which the cabinet allocated €6.2 million in 2022, is part of a broader approach to reduce unsafe situations on our highways in the Netherlands.

The region around Eemshaven and Delfzijl is experiencing strong economic growth, leading to increased traffic on the N33 and thus greater road load.

Analysis

Our project team previously analyzed accident figures to determine which measures would have the greatest effect. Village interests, residents, Groningen Sea Ports, and regional authorities were also intensively involved in the design process.

Ultimately, the province of Groningen and the municipalities of Eemsdelta and Het Hogeland agreed to the package of measures. This package was then included in the major maintenance program for our northern roads, including the N33.

Safety measures on the N33

Major maintenance on the N33 between Appingedam and the Eemshaven was recently carried out. During this work, various traffic safety measures were implemented. For example, overtaking bans now apply on parts of the road, lane markings have been adjusted, and glass bead reflectors have been placed between lanes. Additionally, the verges have been made safer, and the speed limit between Holwierde and the N997 has been reduced from 100 to 80 km/h. Exit lanes at T-junctions have also been removed to reduce accident risk.

Reducing traffic casualties on N-roads

With these interventions, we contribute to the national goal of reducing the number of traffic casualties. A total of €200 million has been made available nationwide to improve traffic safety on our N-roads, where the risk of accidents is relatively high due to high speeds and limited escape options.

More and more N-roads are receiving measures that have quick effects. For example, earlier this year, new lane dividers were installed on the N57 and N59 to prevent dangerous overtaking maneuvers. With the adjustments on the N33, another step is taken towards safer roads in the Netherlands.
