Rijkswaterstaat carried out the first nationwide salting operation of this winter season during the night of December 29 to 30, 2025. Due to dropping temperatures and moisture in the air (condensation), salting trucks drove throughout the country to keep the national roads safe and passable.
Our salting trucks were active across the country, treating a total of 31,622 km of national roads with rock salt. In total, 1,882,571 million kg of salt was spread.
Rijkswaterstaat Ice Control
We monitor the road surface 24/7 in winter using sensors that measure temperature, moisture, and salt content. This way, our ice control teams know exactly when it is necessary to salt, before the road surface temperature drops below 0 and ice can form.
As soon as the alert system indicates a chance of ice, the ice control teams are ready to salt all national roads within 2 hours.
