The wintry conditions with slipperiness will continue for the next few days. The KNMI has issued a yellow code for the entire country until Tuesday morning. Rijkswaterstaat expects a busy Monday morning rush hour, as the Christmas holidays have ended and more commuter traffic is on the road.
Be aware of dangerous driving conditions due to snowfall and slipperiness caused by freezing of wet road sections. Efforts are ongoing to combat slipperiness with all available resources. Therefore, we urge motorists to give space to gritters and snowplows and not to overtake them.
Advice to road users
- Check weather and traffic information before departure. Via the website Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Information we share the current road situation.
- If you are going out, adjust your driving style to the conditions.
- Keep sufficient distance.
- Do not change lanes unnecessarily.
- Give gritters and snowplows space.
Deployment of slipperiness control
We are working with all our might to combat slipperiness. All gritters and snowplows are deployed and will keep operating until all highways are clear. To combat slipperiness, we deploy 577 gritters (which can also be equipped with a snowplow if necessary), 630 snowplows, and 1500 people.
In special circumstances, such as freezing rain and ice formation, we can deploy emergency machines like the Lavastorm and the Firestorm. We use these machines to combat ice patches on the road. For example, the Firestorm was deployed today on the A1 near Deventer.
On the website Rijkswaterstaatstrooit you can see where the gritters are operating and where salting has taken place. The site also shows how much salt has been spread.
