Rijkswaterstaat advises road users to be extra alert for slippery conditions during New Years Eve night. Especially in the south and east of the country, there is a chance of freezing on wet road sections. Other areas may also experience local slipperiness.
During freezing rain, precipitation freezes immediately upon contact with the cold road surface. We spread salt preventively, but during freezing rain a thin layer of ice can form on top of the salt. Traffic is light during the night hours, so the salt is less worked into the road.
This can especially lead to unexpected slippery situations on bridges, viaducts, and quiet roads. This is also because this slipperiness is sometimes barely visible.
