From Monday, January 5, 2026, Rijkswaterstaat will replace the piles of the maintenance quay at the Texel ferry port. The work will take about three weeks. The ferry will continue to operate during this period.
The piles are being placed this month because the quay is fully available. The TESO ferry ‘Dokter Wagemaker’, which is docked here in winter, is in use for the ferry service now that ‘De Texelstroom’ is undergoing major maintenance in Rotterdam.
Maintenance quay
The piles ensure that the TESO ferry can safely berth along the maintenance quay, for example during regular maintenance of the ferry or in quiet periods. After many years of faithful service, some of these iron piles are vulnerable and damaged, or even broken off.
New piles
The new piles will no longer be attached to the quay but only placed deep in the subsoil. This allows them to move slightly with the forces of the ferry and ultimately last longer.
Contractor De Jong Zuurmond will start the work with dredging, after which the new piles will be installed. The work may cause some vibrations and noise for visitors to the ferry port.
Major maintenance
The work on the maintenance quay is part of a series of works within the ferry ports by Rijkswaterstaat. Earlier, we replaced the hoist cables of the traffic bridges and painted the lifting towers.
With the work, we ensure that the ferry ports can be used safely until we eventually replace both landing facilities.
