In the week of Monday, July 28, 2025, the Rijkswaterstaat will start painting the lift towers at the ferry ports of Texel and Den Helder.
The painting work is part of a series of activities that will be carried out this year and next year. The painting work will take about 10 weeks.
What will be painted?
The work will be carried out by contractor De Jong Zuurmond. They will paint the exterior of the lift towers: the walls, edges, doors, and frames. In Den Helder, the electrical house next to the tower and a part of the retaining wall will also be included. This painting job will make the ferry ports look neat again. Small damages will be repaired immediately.
Schedule
The painting of the towers will start in Texel and will take 5 weeks there. After that, it will follow for 5 weeks in Den Helder. The assembly and disassembly of scaffolding are included in this schedule. Painting will take place on weekdays between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Work on the handrails (and parts of the traffic bridge) will only take place this year in Texel. These will last about 10 weeks and start in mid-August. During that period, there will also be other maintenance work at night.
Ferry Service Remains Operational
The ferry service remains accessible and operates according to schedule. Pedestrians and cyclists can always pass the work to board and disembark from the ferry. In some places, the passage may temporarily be narrower or diverted, for example, when we are sanding and dust may be released. This keeps the route safe for travelers and TESO employees.
Major Maintenance at the Ferry Ports
Rijkswaterstaat regularly checks and maintains the ferry ports of Texel and Den Helder. Previously, we replaced the hoisting cables, among other things. With maintenance, we ensure that the ferry ports remain safe to use until we eventually replace both landing facilities in the long term.
