Good news for users of the Lith Lock: since Wednesday evening, October 29, 2025, the main lock chamber is again operational for all shipping traffic. Contractor combination Mourik-Swarco completed the work a month earlier than planned.
Due to a collision in February 2025, the lock door of the northern chamber was severely damaged. After lifting the door out and a thorough inspection, we expected the full repair to last until the end of November. The work progressed well, resulting in completion a month earlier. The southern chamber of Lith Lock remained open throughout the period.
Maintenance South Netherlands
Rijkswaterstaat South Netherlands continuously manages and maintains the Meuse River and canals in North Brabant. This is done to keep the waterways smooth and safe for shipping.
Many bridges, tunnels, locks, and viaducts were built in the last century and therefore require maintenance. Intensive use and heavier traffic can sometimes cause system failures and require renovation and replacement of many of these structures.
