The new highway A24 has been in use since December 7 for one year. The road network in the region has noticeably strengthened with the arrival of the A24.

On an average workday, approximately 40,000 to 43,000 vehicles use the A24. On weekends, this is about 25,000 vehicles per day. Usage remains slightly below expectations, but there is clear growth in traffic over time, and usage continues to increase.

Getting road users accustomed to a new road and establishing a new route choice takes time. On the A24, road users also need to get used to paying tolls.

Also Effects on Surrounding Roads

The effects are also noticeable on surrounding roads. For example, traffic on the A15 between the Rozenburg and Benelux interchanges has decreased, as has traffic on the A4 between the Benelux and Kethelplein interchanges.

On the A20 between the Vlaardingen and Kethelplein interchanges, there is more traffic as expected. To accommodate this extra traffic, the A20 was previously widened with an additional lane per direction.

Congestion and Disruption in the Region Unavoidable

The road network in the region has been strengthened with the arrival of the A24, but it is important to know that traffic bottlenecks will remain in the Rotterdam/The Hague metropolitan region. Traffic continues to grow.

In addition, in South Holland we will replace and renovate a large number of outdated bridges, tunnels, and roads in the coming years. This is a major renewal task that unfortunately cannot be carried out without inconvenience or disruption.
