The malfunction in the Traffic Center Netherlands (VCNL) and the Traffic Center Central Netherlands (VCMN) in Utrecht, which began on Monday morning, September 29, 2025, has been resolved. This means that Rijkswaterstaat can now take traffic measures again, such as placing or removing red crosses above the highway. The peak lanes on the A12, A27, and A28 have just been reopened.
Cause of Power Failure
On Monday morning, it became clear that the backup system for the power supply in the Traffic Center Netherlands (VCNL) and the Traffic Center Central Netherlands (VCMN) in Utrecht had failed. At a later point, it was found that the power supply was running via the emergency generator. Ultimately, this also failed. At the beginning of Monday afternoon, the emergency generator was replaced and the systems were gradually restarted.
Monday Evening Rush Hour
The Monday evening rush hour is busier than normal due to the closed peak lanes. In the Utrecht region, there were significant traffic jams, leading to earlier advice to postpone travel if possible until after the evening rush hour. We expect that by reopening the peak lanes, the traffic jams will decrease quickly.
