On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Rijkswaterstaat and Heijmans organized an information evening about the progress of the renovation of the Koninginnensluis in Nieuwegein. The work on the Koninginnensluis starts on October 1, 2025.
During this third information evening, residents, neighbors, and other interested parties were updated by Rijkswaterstaat and contractor Heijmans. They presented on the progress of the project. Three topics were central: the planning of the work, the expected inconvenience for the surrounding area and road users, and the current situation of the Emmabrug.
Information Tables Meeting Emmabrug
After the presentation, visitors could gather more information and engage in discussions at various theme tables. There was a table about the execution, where the disruptions and inconveniences were explained. At the design table, explanations were given about the design plans, and design drawings were displayed. There was also a table for communication about the project, where people could sign up for the newsletter and register for the BouwApp. The Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal district of Rijkswaterstaat was present to answer questions about the Zuidersluis. The municipality of Nieuwegein also had a table where residents could discuss the neighborhood initiative WarmVreeswijk.
Emmabrug
Additional research shows that the material of the Emmabrug is not strong enough, which is why it needs to be replaced. In the coming time, we will work on the design. Unfortunately, this work does not fit into the current renovation schedule. The replacement of the Emmabrug may only happen in 2027. We are in discussions with the municipality of Nieuwegein, the neighborhood platform, and other stakeholders about this situation.
We are taking into account the monumental value of the Emmabrug. The Cultural Heritage Agency and the Commission for Environmental Quality of Nieuwegein are involved in this process. With that design, we will apply for new permits.
