Due to problems with steel cables, the table bridge between Noordhorn and Zuidhorn has been closed to all road traffic since December 23, 2025. Therefore, Rijkswaterstaat has created a detour route for car and truck traffic via provincial road N355, indicated by yellow signs.
For pedestrians and cyclists, a temporary alternative connection has been arranged. From Saturday, January 3 until Friday, January 9, 2026, buses and minibuses will be used to assist cyclists and pedestrians.
What does the temporary solution look like?
Small minibuses (8 persons)
- When: daily from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM (weekends from 7:00 AM)
- Route: starting at the gas station at Industrieweg 5 in Noordhorn, via the shopping center Zuidhorn to Zuidhorn train station.
Large buses (50 persons)
- When: Monday, January 5 to Friday, January 9, from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM
- Route: from the existing Langestraat bus stop in Noordhorn directly to Zuidhorn train station.
Structural solution
We are working on a structural solution: making the table bridge suitable for cyclists and pedestrians by constructing two ramps. Next week we expect more clarity about the planning and execution.
Our effort is focused on building these ramps as quickly as possible. Once this connection is available, the bus service will stop.
Situation of table bridges Van Starkenborghkanaal
Three bridges over the Van Starkenborghkanaal now show the same pattern: cable breaks occur. These are the three table bridges: Aduard, Dorkwerd, and Zuidhorn. Aduard recently underwent an intensive inspection. This bridge is safely operable.
For all three bridges, new cables have been ordered. These will be replaced as soon as possible, with priority given to the Zuidhorn bridge, followed by Dorkwerd and then Aduard.
