Last weekend, Rijkswaterstaat conducted a large-scale enforcement action on the Lemmer-Delfzijl shipping route and surrounding lakes in collaboration with the province of Friesland. During the action, compliance with navigation rules was monitored, and as usual, explanations were provided about safe behavior on the water.
Busy Waters Demand Alertness
The beautiful weather led to a busy boating weekend. Mobile traffic leader Max from Rijkswaterstaat: ‘We saw many recreational users enjoying the water, but we also had to intervene against dangerous or disruptive behavior. Think of not wearing a kill cord, speeding, and not having a navigation license. In total, 13 official reports and 47 warnings were issued.’
In addition to enforcement, the mobile traffic leaders from Rijkswaterstaat engaged in conversations with waterway users. They explained, among other things, that the stopping distance of a cargo ship is longer than one might think, why speeding is so dangerous, and swimming in the navigation channel is prohibited. ‘Education is a fixed part of our approach,’ said Max.
‘Many people want to do the right thing; sometimes a simple conversation helps prevent risks. In addition to enforcement, regular work continued as usual. We assisted a capsized sailboat, towed a motorboat with a breakdown to the shore, and listened to skippers involved in a near-collision. It’s never boring on the water; you never know what your day will bring.’
Together We Keep It Safe
The action in Friesland and Groningen is part of a series of national and regional enforcement actions. Rijkswaterstaat emphasizes that safe boating starts with good preparation, respect for each other, and adherence to the rules. ‘This way, we ensure that everyone can enjoy the water safely and with pleasure.’
