The A12 has been closed for 9 days and nights towards Utrecht from junction Maanderbroek (Veenendaal) to junction Lunetten. Since Monday morning, May 19, 2025, at 03:00, the road is open to traffic again.
Major maintenance has taken place over a stretch of 30 km. The asphalt has been replaced by quieter asphalt in large parts. Additionally, maintenance was carried out on trees and verges, traffic signs, lighting, and guardrails. Graffiti has also been removed.
‘Works executed according to plan’
Director-General of Rijkswaterstaat Martin Wijnen: ‘All works have been carried out according to plan. The A12 has been deliberately closed across the entire lane during the works. This is safer for the road worker. The duration of execution is shorter, but more intense. This benefits the quality and lifespan of the asphalt because we can asphalt lane-wide. Thanks to the help of road users by working from home more, traveling outside peak hours, or choosing alternative transport, traffic disruption was limited to a maximum of 1 hour of extra travel time.’
‘In the coming years, more projects of this kind are on the agenda, and as far as I am concerned, this is the way to do it together. By strengthening the infrastructure now, we are a strong country that can remain in motion quickly and safely.’
‘Thank you for your angelic patience’
Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Barry Madlener: ‘We thank motorists for their angelic patience. It is unfortunate that so much maintenance is needed on our pride, the Dutch infrastructure. Thanks to everyone: the road workers who worked day and night, all involved governments and partners such as provinces, municipalities, emergency services, and safety regions, and thus also thanks for the understanding and patience of motorists. This is a remarkable achievement.’
‘There is something beautiful that we will enjoy for decades when we take the next step in the fall. Well-maintained infrastructure gives us freedom of movement. And yes, I am proud of that.’
Another closure of 9 days
The same section of the A12 (Veenendaal towards Utrecht) will be closed again for 9 consecutive days and nights this year to complete the full job. This closure will last from Friday evening, August 22, 20:00 until Monday morning, September 1, 05:00. Rijkswaterstaat and the ministry hope to count on the help of road users again because they choose to work from home, avoid peak hours, or choose alternative transport.
After that, the A12 towards Utrecht from Veenendaal to Lunetten can last for years. The A12 from Utrecht to Veenendaal towards Veenendaal will also be addressed. These works are still being scheduled.
