From Monday, March 2 to Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Rijkswaterstaat will conduct waterbed sediment research in the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal at the Demkabocht, near the Zuilen district (Utrecht). This research is an important step in preparing for the widening of the Demkabocht.
During this period, samples of the waterbed will be taken and investigated for the presence of explosive war remnants.
Why are we conducting this research?
Employees of Geonius Milieu BV investigate the composition and quality of the waterbed. Employees of T&A-Survey BV investigate whether there are explosive war remnants in the canal bed.
This information is necessary to carry out the widening of the Demkabocht safely and according to environmental regulations. This ensures the work is done properly and responsibly.
Where will the work take place?
The work mainly takes place on the water, with shipping guidance present to safely lead ships past the work. The research into explosive war remnants is carried out from the land.
The first 100 m of the walking path from the Demka railway bridge is closed from Monday, March 2 to Tuesday, March 10 between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM; on weekends there is no work and the path is open. Some noise disturbance may also occur.
