The A1 between junction Watergraafsmeer and Diemen will be reopened for traffic on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 5:00 AM. The major maintenance between both junctions has been completed a day earlier than originally planned.
Since Friday, May 9, Rijkswaterstaat has been carrying out major maintenance on the A1 between junction Watergraafsmeer and Diemen. Over a period of 15 days, the asphalt and joints have been replaced over a stretch of 4 km, noise barriers have been repaired, and maintenance has been carried out on 2 bridges and a viaduct.
Stormwater drains have also been inspected and cleaned, and the guardrail has been repaired where necessary. The work has gone smoothly, allowing the road to open a day earlier. The alternative lane towards Amsterdam from Flevoland is also available again.
Chief Engineer Director Gohdar Massom of Rijkswaterstaat West-Nederland Noord; I am very pleased that the work on the A1 has gone smoothly and that the road can open a day earlier. The major maintenance on the A1 is the first major project this summer in and around Amsterdam.
We have made a good start. It was very busy on the roads around Amsterdam, but the delay time remained, except for a few moments, between 30 and 60 minutes. It is good to see that road users are not traveling together or differently. I urge road users to stay well prepared in the coming months.
Gravel
Road users driving on the new A1 may experience a tapping of gravel in the wheel wells of their vehicles. To ensure the A1 can be safely used, Rijkswaterstaat spreads grains over the road after asphalting. This spreading makes the road rougher and is applied with a roller in the new asphalt.
However, there will always be some grains left, which can cause tapping, especially shortly after the road is opened.
Work on Ascension Day
The next works around Amsterdam will start with Ascension Day. From Wednesday, May 28, 10:00 PM to Monday, June 2, 5:00 AM, several connecting roads at Junction De Nieuwe Meer will be closed due to work on the Zuidasdok project.
Extra travel time can increase up to 60 minutes. More info can be found in the report A10: major disruption during Ascension weekend 2025.
