The beaches of Domburg, Cadzand, and Nieuwesluis are ready for summer. Rijkswaterstaat has added sand for coastal maintenance in the spring of 2025. This extra sand keeps the coastline in place, protecting the hinterland from the sea and ensuring Zeeland does not lose land.
In total, dredging ships have brought in about 1.5 million m3 of sand from the North Sea: 520,000 m3 on the beach of Domburg, 610,000 m3 at Cadzand, and 325,000 m3 at Nieuwesluis.
Recreational Sand Fund
The works on the beach of Domburg and Cadzand have been used as a pilot for the recreational sand fund, established by Zeeland coastal municipalities and the province of Zeeland. The beach and dunes are important for protection against the sea, but also essential for the local economy. Rijkswaterstaat and the coastal municipalities examined the possibilities to combine both.
Maintaining Coastline
This summer, work will continue at sea. In the Westerschelde estuary near the Vlakte van Raan, 1 million m3 of sand will be added to maintain sand reserves for the future as sea levels rise. In 2026, works are planned on the beach of Dishoek.
