Public Works and Water Management will be working in the summer and autumn of 2025 at various locations in and around Rotterdam on roads, bridges, and tunnels. Almost everyone traveling to, from, or through Rotterdam will experience disruptions. The province, municipalities, and ProRail will also be carrying out work on the road and rail.

We carefully coordinate the work and combine tasks where possible. Furthermore, there is so much work to be done in the coming years that this cannot always be done only during quiet periods, such as at night, on weekends, and during holidays. There will always be work being done somewhere on the road. This cannot be done without disruptions. Therefore, always be well-prepared when traveling. Allow for extra travel time and detours, or travel differently or at another time if possible.

As we work on various highways around Rotterdam, parts of the A15, A13, and A16, and the A20 will be closed, especially on weekends. We will carry out asphalt maintenance on the A20 near the Giessen Bridge in August. Furthermore, we will replace a viaduct in the A16 over the Hoofdweg in Rotterdam and finalize the new A16 Rotterdam highway. We will also carry out major maintenance on the A16 between the junctions of Ridderkerk and Terbregseplein.

Call to Road Users

  • Plan your trip well and check the current traffic information before departure via the website of Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Information or VanAnaarBeter .
  • Follow the instructions and detour routes on the digital information panels and yellow signs along the road.
  • Adjust your travel behavior when possible to avoid disruptions caused by the work. For example, choose public transport or a different route, or work from home if possible.

Outlook for 2026 and 2027

We will work almost every weekend on the A16 in the autumn. By scheduling the major maintenance now, we reduce the chance of unplanned maintenance in the coming years. This way, we can inform everyone in advance about where disruptions will occur, so that everyone can take this into account. We also ensure that the A16 can serve as a detour route when we work in other areas.

Because even in 2026 and 2027 (and beyond), work in the Rotterdam region will continue. In 2026, for example, there will be major maintenance on the A20 between Maasdijk and Gouda, and in the summer of 2026, we will carry out major maintenance on the Algerabrug (N210) between Krimpen a/d IJssel and Capelle a/d IJssel. The major maintenance of the A15 between Maasvlakte and Vaanplein that started in 2025 will also continue in 2026 and 2027.

We are further preparing the renovation of 4 viaducts in and around Kethelplein (A4-A20) in Schiedam, which is currently scheduled to start in 2027, as well as the renewal of the Giessen Bridge (A20) and the renovation of the Van Brienenoord Bridge.

Not Taken for Granted

Good bridges, tunnels, viaducts, locks, and (shipping) routes are indispensable for our country. Millions of people, packages, and goods travel daily from A to B, thanks to our infrastructure. We want to maintain this, and it is anything but taken for granted. Much of our infrastructure was built in the 1950s and 1960s. In the meantime, we have many more inhabitants, more traffic, and heavier vehicles.

We must also consider extreme weather, such as heat, flooding, or drought. In other words, we are in need of a significant renewal task. Ultimately, we do it for a reason: a well-maintained infrastructure gives us freedom of movement: crucial for work, study, trade, vacation, family visits, and supplying our stores and hospitals.
