The renovation works on the Spijkenisser Bridge this summer vacation are progressing smoothly. A significant milestone was achieved during the first 4 closures: for the first time, the eastern lift successfully performed a bridge rotation with the new control system.

The first 4 weekends focused on testing the new systems. The results of these tests are used to implement adjustments and improvements. Additionally, new railings have been installed on the bridge and work has taken place inside the bridge, including modifications to the stairs.

The Spijkenisser Bridge is remotely operated, controlled, and monitored from the Traffic Center Rhoon. Since the bridge is getting new systems, a new control system is also required. The new operator desks have also been tested this weekend.

Quieter than expected, busy during rush hour

During the first closures, the diversion route (A15 Botlek Bridge) was quieter than expected. This is partly because there is less traffic on the road during the summer vacation. On weekend days, traffic could usually flow well.

On Fridays and Mondays, this was also the case. Only during the evening rush hour towards Spijkenisse was it often busy. The extra travel time remained within the expected 60 minutes.

In case of congestion on the diversion route, emergency services, under the guidance of traffic controllers, are allowed to drive over the bike path of the Hartel Bridge. This has been used several times.

Ferry in demand

The free ferry for (moped) cyclists, pedestrians, and mobility scooters is being used a lot this summer. A total of about 25,000 passengers have made a crossing. Almost always, everyone could take the ferry, which operates approximately every quarter hour. Only at peak times did people sometimes have to wait a round.

Continuation of summer works

In the coming weeks, we will continue testing the eastern lift. This means that the bridge will be closed for 4 days around each weekend, from Thursday 10:00 PM to Tuesday 5:00 AM:

  • August 14 - 19
  • August 21 - 26
  • August 28 - September 1 (ends Monday 5:00 AM)

Car traffic will be diverted via the N218 (Hartel Bridge) and A15 (Botlek Bridge). Please be aware of an extra travel time of 30 to 60 minutes during busy times. The western lift will remain available for shipping.

We advise road users to travel at a quieter time or another day, to choose public transport or (moped) bike, or to work from home where possible.
