The flu epidemic that began in mid-January 2025 is over. The number of people visiting their doctor with flu-like symptoms decreased further last week. Samples from people with flu-like symptoms still show the flu virus (influenza virus).
The number of people visiting their doctor with flu-like symptoms has decreased further to 31 per 100,000 last week. Some of these individuals had samples taken from their throat and nose. The flu virus is still being detected, but the number of submitted samples and the number of samples positive for the flu virus are decreasing. In 7 out of 19 samples (37%) examined last week, the flu virus was found. Other sources, such as the Virological weekly reports from laboratories and Infectieradar, also indicate that the number of people with a flu virus infection has been decreasing in recent weeks.
Still Other Respiratory Viruses
Although we no longer speak of a flu epidemic, the flu virus has not completely disappeared. There are still people with the flu in the Netherlands, although the number is much lower than during the peak of the annual flu epidemic. Additionally, there are other viruses circulating that cause coughing, sneezing, and other respiratory complaints. Check the status of respiratory infections in the Netherlands.
