The implementation of a broad strategy for employee health has proven ineffective so far. According to Denise Smit, who is defending her thesis at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, more attention from management is required to achieve health outcomes.
Healthy employees are vital for employers as they are more productive and less frequently sick. Given that employees spend much time at work, it is an ideal opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle. While organizations are already rolling out various initiatives, the focus often remains on individual actions such as providing information. A broad approach also considers the working environment, such as the physical workspace or social support from colleagues and management.
Active Role of Management
Research among four organizations in the Netherlands reveals that implementing this broad approach can be time-consuming, and typically only sporadic activities have been introduced, like replacing soft drinks with water or organizing sports workshops. Greater support from management is crucial to establish structural activities. More time, attention, budget, and policies concerning vitality are necessary for this.
Visibility of Working Group
A key conclusion from the research is the need for a multidisciplinary working group. This group should include HR, employees, and managers. Mapping out the needs and possibilities of all employees is crucial. Additionally, this working group must be visible so that employees can reach out to them with questions or ideas. This encourages the implementation and participation in activities.
