The Dutch population is working longer and generally in good health. Even at older ages, most people are physically and mentally able to perform their work. However, attention remains necessary for groups who cannot, such as those with little education or heavy occupations. This is shown by research from the RIVM.
For this research, the RIVM studied workers aged 55 and older in 2010, 2015, and 2019. The first group worked on average another 8.5 years, while the 55-year-olds from 2019 are expected to work another 11 years. This means that the latter group works on average 2.5 years longer than the group from 2010.
Additional working years in good health
These extra 2.5 years are worked on average in good health and with good work ability. Work ability means that they are physically and mentally capable of doing the work. Over the entire period from age 55, people currently work on average one and a half years in poor health and 2.5 years with reduced work ability.
Special attention remains necessary for some groups
The RIVM states that ongoing attention is needed for groups who spend more working years in poor health and with reduced work ability. Think of people with little education and those in heavy occupations, such as in (agricultural) farming, industry, and education. Employers and the government can play an important role here. For example, by helping to lighten the work, providing targeted support to these people, or giving them the opportunity to stop working earlier.
The RIVM conducted this research on behalf of the Ministry of SZW Social Affairs and Employment (Social Affairs and Employment).
