After consultation with the KNMI Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute), RIVM has decided to activate the National Heat Plan. This will take effect from Tuesday, August 12 at 10:00 AM for all provinces. The aim of this activation is to signal caregivers and professionals that hot weather is coming. This helps to make them aware to pay extra attention to the people they care for. They can then take this into account in supporting and interacting with vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and young children.

Vulnerable Groups

Elderly people (75+) form the largest vulnerable group because they are less able to regulate their body temperature and have a diminished sense of thirst. People with chronic illnesses, those in social isolation, the homeless, and very young children can also easily experience discomfort or health problems without taking measures. They may experience discomfort such as fatigue, headaches, and concentration problems. They are also at higher risk of more serious health issues, such as dehydration and heat stroke.

Care for Each Other

Do you care for someone else? Or do you have vulnerable people in your surroundings? Then you can help them by paying extra attention to them during the heat. There are various things you can do to lessen their discomfort:

  • Place a glass or a jug of drink for someone else so they can stay hydrated
  • Help keep the house (and head) cool by closing curtains and turning on a fan or air conditioning (external link)
  • Take them outside only in the early hours or later in the evening. It is good not to exert too much during the hottest hours of the day.

Summer

In the summer months, it can be very warm. Many people enjoy the warmth. The sun shines, which makes people happy. However, for some, heat can lead to health problems. Those who cannot take good care of themselves need more attention on hot days. There is also extra attention needed at events, schools, and daycare centers.
