The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) grants subsidies to 7 projects to address challenges posed by a sustainable energy system. These challenges arise because natural sources like wind and sun do not produce electricity consistently at all times. The subsidy comes from the Mission-driven Research, Development and Innovation (MOOI) scheme: System Integration. The projects will start working on their energy innovations in 2026.

Too Much or Too Little Wind and Sun

The Netherlands aims to have a climate-neutral energy system by 2050: a system that has no negative impact on the climate. To achieve this, sustainable energy sources such as solar and wind energy are needed. However, these natural sources do not provide electricity in a stable manner. At times, there is too little wind or sun, or conversely, too much. This creates challenges. The 7 projects receiving subsidies will tackle these challenges by researching and developing energy innovations.

Energy Innovations Within 3 Themes

The energy innovations fall within one or more of the following themes:

  • Transport and distribution of energy: innovations that ensure we can use existing and future energy grids more efficiently. The electricity grid is increasingly overloaded due to the rapid growth of solar and wind energy and the switch to electricity (electrification). This delays new connections and sustainability projects.
  • Storage and conversion of energy: innovations for storing energy and converting energy into other energy forms. This is necessary because we do not always generate sustainable electricity when there is demand. Storage and conversion allow us to use energy at a later time.
  • Large-scale use of energy: innovations that enable more flexible use of large amounts of energy. Sectors such as industry and greenhouse horticulture are not yet sufficiently equipped to adjust their energy use to the fluctuating supply of sustainable energy.

Multiple partners (such as knowledge institutions and energy suppliers) work from different knowledge areas on a MOOI project. Together they achieve the best results.

Selected Projects

RVO received 51 project proposals. Of these, 14 led to a final subsidy application and 7 projects received subsidies. The following projects will start in 2026 with a total of €21.5 million in subsidies to research and develop energy innovations:

  • RenewaFLEXNL develops a solution for storing large amounts of energy in the long term.
  • SPROUT works on CO2-neutral greenhouses and investigates flexible energy use in greenhouse horticulture.
  • SYMPHONIE ensures that local energy initiatives from companies, municipalities and grid operators come together to jointly solve problems with the overloaded electricity grid (grid congestion).
  • Watt2Watt strengthens local energy communities of citizens and companies into multi-commodity communities that use and manage energy.
  • BACH develops an approach to proactively tackle grid congestion based on data.
  • COSP develops knowledge and methods to directly use heat released in industrial and agricultural processes.
  • CONNECT develops methods to better integrate the electricity grid with heat networks.
