The European Union and the United States reached a verbal agreement on import duties and trade on Sunday, July 27. They made agreements regarding the import duties that will apply.

The US will impose a basic rate of 15% starting August 1, 2025. This will apply to most goods from the EU. Many details of the agreement are yet to be announced. Follow our website for updates.

More Certainty

This agreement provides more certainty for Dutch entrepreneurs exporting to the US. Since April, there has been uncertainty for European exporters: what import duties apply, or will apply, to their exports to the US? There was an American basic rate of 10% for all countries. After August 1, 2025, this American import duty would increase for each country if no new trade agreements were made by then.

For EU entrepreneurs, an American basic rate of 30% was looming. With this agreement, that increase is off the table.

Stability and Predictability

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, states on the EU website: Todays deal creates certainty in uncertain times. It provides stability and predictability for citizens and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.

Hanneke Boerma, State Secretary for Foreign Trade, says on X: “Relieved that the EU and the US have reached an agreement on import duties. An unpredictable trade war would have been in no ones interest. At the same time, I realize that this agreement is not ideal and can still have significant consequences for many Dutch companies.”
