With a new subsidy, the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth aims to stimulate research and development projects for nuclear energy. Entrepreneurs who want to explore or develop innovations for nuclear energy with other parties can contribute to an interest survey by RVO until May 12, 2025. Their input helps the ministry further develop the subsidy.
Focus on Climate Goals
We aim to generate CO2-neutral electricity in the future to meet climate goals. Nuclear energy plays an important role in this. Therefore, the government wants to keep the nuclear power plant in Borssele open longer (if it can be done safely) and build four large new nuclear power plants. The government is also investigating whether it is possible to realize Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in the Netherlands. These are small reactors.
New Subsidy for Nuclear Energy
To stimulate research and development into nuclear energy, the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth is working on a new subsidy. The new subsidy focuses on research and development projects on nuclear reactor and fuel cycle technology and the storage of radioactive waste and geological disposal.
The subsidy is part of the Mission-driven Research, Development and Innovation (MOOI) scheme. With this scheme, entrepreneurs receive subsidies to work in a partnership on innovative solutions that contribute to climate goals.
From Pre-registration to Market
For the subsidy being developed by the ministry, the partnership must make a mandatory pre-registration. This opens in the summer of 2025. They can submit the final subsidy application at the beginning of 2026.
The partnerships must carry out their project activities within four years. The innovation itself must be ready for the market within ten years. This means that they demonstrate the innovation in an environment where the innovation can be used. The innovation must contribute to the further rollout of nuclear energy in the Netherlands.
