From 2026, entrepreneurs can apply for subsidies for the purchase and installation of battery packs and any charging infrastructure for sea vessels in Dutch seaports. They can respond to the new scheme via an internet consultation until January 17.

The scheme encourages the use of batteries on sea vessels. The goal is to reduce nitrogen emissions in areas where nature is vulnerable, such as Natura 2000 areas.

With a battery pack, a ship can temporarily turn off or reduce the use of its engine or generator when entering or leaving a seaport. This results in lower nitrogen emissions.
