In March 2026, the pre-registration will open at the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) for a new subsidy for carbon removal. Carbon removal is a method to take CO2 emissions that cause global warming out of the air and store them long-term. The subsidy is for entrepreneurs and knowledge institutions. Together they work on developing innovative techniques.
The government invests and calls on entrepreneurs to do the same
The Netherlands is working towards a climate-neutral future by 2050. This means ensuring the climate does not change further by emitting fewer greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2). Or by compensating for remaining emissions. Once these steps are taken, there will still be residual emissions. The next goal is to remove more CO2 than is emitted. This is done to compensate for residual emissions. Another term for this is net negative emissions.
Technology not ready for removing large amounts
Carbon removal thus plays an important role in achieving our climate goals. But the technology for removing carbon is not yet ready to remove large amounts. Therefore, the government invests in researching and developing carbon removal techniques. RVO calls on entrepreneurs and knowledge institutions to pre-register if they are interested in the new subsidy MOOI: Carbon Removal. Pre-registration is mandatory to participate in the final application round.
Applying for carbon removal subsidy
Entrepreneurs and knowledge institutions apply for the new subsidy within the existing subsidy scheme Mission-driven Research, Development and Innovation (MOOI). With this subsidy, they collaborate with other parties on innovative solutions. This helps achieve our climate goals. The MOOI subsidy opens twice a year and consists of a pre-registration and a final application. The new subsidy is a new theme with its own budget within the existing MOOI scheme.
Matchmaking MOOI and EKOO subsidy
On Tuesday, March 3, the Top Sector Energy (TKI) and RVO organize a matchmaking for the subsidy schemes MOOI: Industry, MOOI: Carbon Removal and EKOO: Industry. During this matchmaking, RVO explains the subsidies and the application process. Then follows the actual matchmaking, where you can meet future collaboration partners. The matchmaking takes place on Tuesday, March 3 in Utrecht. More information will follow.
