The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) invites entrepreneurs and research organizations to contribute ideas for a new subsidy for carbon removal. This involves researching and developing innovations for capturing CO2 from the ambient air, water, or biomass. Responses can be submitted until October 6.

How does this subsidy fit into our climate goals?

The Netherlands is working towards a climate-neutral future by 2025. This means we need to ensure that the climate does not change further by emitting fewer greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2). Or compensating for the remaining emissions. Once we achieve this, the next goal is to remove more CO2 than we emit. Another term for this is net negative emissions.

Carbon removal plays an important role in this, as it actively helps to reduce the amount of CO2 in the ambient air. This way, we can counteract further global warming. The government therefore wants to invest in research into and development of carbon removal techniques.

New subsidy for carbon removal

With a new subsidy, the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth aims to encourage research into and development of carbon-removing innovations. By carbon removal, we mean capturing CO2 from the ambient air, water, or biomass. The goal of these new techniques should be to capture CO2 for permanent storage or storage in long-lasting products.

Entrepreneurs will soon be able to apply for the new subsidy within the existing subsidy scheme Mission-Driven Research, Development, and Innovation (MOOI). With this subsidy, entrepreneurs can collaborate with other parties on innovative solutions. This way, they help achieve our climate goals.

From pre-registration to the market

To be eligible for the subsidy, entrepreneurs are required to submit a pre-registration. They will then receive advice, after which they can submit a final application for the subsidy. The pre-registration opens in 2026.

For this subsidy, the partnership must carry out the project activities within 4 years. The innovation itself must be market-ready within 10 years. This means that the partnership can demonstrate the innovation in the environment for which it was developed. The innovation must assist in the further rollout of carbon removal in the Netherlands, so that future techniques can build on your technology. In this way, your innovation contributes to a future with large-scale carbon removal.

Are you participating in our interest survey?
