The Dutch electric vehicle (EV) sector has grown rapidly over 8 years. The added value increased from €0.13 billion to nearly €3 billion. The EV sector now has 20 times as many full-time jobs as in 2015. This is according to research by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

Billion-Euro Growth in the Sector

According to the biennial Monitor Economic Significance and Development of the Electric Vehicle Sector by RVO, the economic value of the EV sector rose significantly. From €0.13 billion to €2.93 billion between 2015 and 2023. This represents an average annual growth of nearly 50%. The number of jobs also increased explosively: from 760 full-time jobs to 15,800. Currently, one in ten jobs in the automotive industry is focused on electric vehicles.
The strongest growth is seen in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, light electric vehicles, and charging infrastructure. Electric trucks, mobile construction equipment, and vessels are still in an early growth phase, but these markets can still grow much more.

Export and Production Increase

Export and manufacturing industries also contribute to the earning capacity of Dutch companies. In 2023, the Netherlands exported €425 million worth of electric vehicles and EV components. Within manufacturing, about one in ten produced parts are now intended for electric vehicles.
The number of charging points grew to over one million in 2 years. Nearly 10 times as many ultra-fast charging points were also added. This keeps the Netherlands a European leader.

Challenges and Opportunities

At the same time, there are challenges. Such as growing imports of electric vehicles from China and an overloaded power grid. These challenges create space for innovation in battery storage and smart charging. The monitor concludes that the EV sector is becoming increasingly important for the economy. And this offers lasting opportunities for innovation, employment, and export.

Financial Support for Electric Transport

The EV sector in the Netherlands is developing rapidly and growing strongly. This has many consequences for you as an entrepreneur or individual. RVO therefore offers financial support to purchase and use electric transport.
