The PIB cluster Netherlands Fruit Solutions Uzbekistan held a knowledge session on September 4 and 5 in the Tashkent region (Uzbekistan). More than 30 local growers, agronomists, agricultural advisors, and representatives from sector organizations participated in the interactive session. This has led to additional knowledge about modern Dutch harvesting technology (pre-harvest and post-harvest).

Improving Uzbek Fruit Cultivation

Nico Vernooij, consultant at Fruitconsult (Wageningen), provided practical training in an Uzbek demonstration orchard. The training covered:

  • methods for assessing the ripeness of apples and pears
  • practical examples of harvesting with minimal loss
  • techniques for sorting, classifying, and storing fruit
  • environmentally friendly strategies for crop protection
  • development of the supply chain and market access
  • establishment and development of knowledge centers in rural areas

New Initiatives

In addition to direct knowledge transfer, the session led to:

  • formation of an initiative group
  • launch of a digital platform for continuous support and interaction among cluster members
  • establishment of new local demonstration sites by Uzbek organizations

This encourages knowledge sharing between the Dutch and Uzbek sectors over a longer period. Uzbek growers are also sharing more knowledge and experience among themselves.

Positioning the Dutch Sector in Uzbekistan

The session aimed at knowledge transfer and strong positioning of the Dutch sector in Uzbekistan. Both goals have been achieved.

Fruitconsult has received requests from Uzbekistan for annual consultancy services, winter pruning training, and practical internships.
