The cleaning sector is working on a system for the reuse of plastic packaging in preparation for new EU legislation. Soon, entrepreneurs and companies will be able to register to help set up and guide this project. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) supports with advice and helps companies connect with each other to collaborate.
Ambition for 2027: Circular System
By 2030, 35% of plastic packaging in Europe must consist of recycled material. NVZ, the Dutch trade association for manufacturers of cleaning agents and cleaning services, wants to get ahead of this. The goal is to set up a system for recycling and reusing plastic packaging by 2027, including HDPE bottles (bottles made from high-quality recycled polyethylene).
Preparing for Packaging Legislation
Recycling HDPE bottles makes high-quality recyclate available for new packaging. This contributes to the circular economy. Cleaning companies, manufacturers of plastic packaging, and distributors can now join this chain breakthrough project. The circular system helps them work responsibly and prepare for the new EU legislation.
RVO Supports Entrepreneurs in the Cleaning Sector
RVO provides entrepreneurs in the cleaning sector, such as manufacturers of cleaning agents and cleaning companies, with advice on recycling and efficient resource management. RVO also promotes collaboration between companies in the chain. This is done, for example, by issuing a call for chain management. An independent party coordinates the collaboration and ensures a good consideration of interests. This project can serve as an example for other entrepreneurs who want to contribute to the circular economy, especially those focusing on reuse and environmentally friendly ways of working.
Successful Pilot as a Basis for Scaling Up
In 2021, a pilot took place in which empty HDPE bottles were collected, recycled, reused, and improved. The results were positive: the quality of the recycled material was good, and the process was cost-effective and feasible. This pilot forms the basis for the national circular project that is now being rolled out throughout the entire chain.
