The MBO Sustainability Regulation (MVR) supports MBO institutions in integrating sustainability into education and practice. The new subsidy helps these educational institutions hire a sustainability coordinator. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) implements the MVR. Applications can be submitted from February 16, 2026.
Taking Steps Towards Sustainability Ambitions
With the MVR, MBO institutions can hire a sustainability coordinator (DuCo) or strengthen the role of an existing DuCo in their team. A DuCo ensures cohesion in the education program of an educational institution. This person also ensures that sustainability becomes part of the education. The new regulation gives MBO institutions room to connect sustainability with education, the organization, and practice.
Exploring Opportunities
Participation in the learning network SustainaBul MBO peer-review (assessment by colleagues) is part of the regulation. In this national assessment, MBO institutions evaluate their sustainability steps. The peer-review clearly shows MBO institutions where they stand regarding sustainability and what opportunities exist to advance further as an MBO institution.
Apply on Time
RVO processes applications in order of receipt. It is important that MBO institutions submit applications on time, even if the maximum budget has been reached. The budget may be increased in the meantime, allowing previously submitted applications to be granted.
The Sustainability Coordinator
Many MBO institutions already work on circularity and sustainability. However, in practice, there is often a desire to devote more time and attention to this. Only in this way can the topics be well connected in education. A sustainability coordinator (DuCo) plays an important role here. The DuCo gives sustainability a fixed and visible place within educational practice and encourages sustainable initiatives within the MBO institution. This way, students develop more knowledge and skills for the future.
