The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) will make more inspection results public from July 1; this expansion relates to the assessment of food safety inspections B2C.
The NVWA actively makes inspection results in the hospitality industry public, and since 2024, the categories craft and retail have been added. For the hospitality category, the results are now expanded to include the results of food safety inspections from, for example, cafes, canteens, and catering companies. For the retail category, the results are also expanded to include the results of food safety inspections from, for example, department stores and shops selling other food and drink products. This pertains to inspections that the NVWA will conduct starting July 1, 2025.
By actively disclosing inspection results, the NVWA aims to ensure that consumers know how food safety is managed by companies offering food and drink. Consumers can base their choices on this information, for example, when they want to dine out or purchase food and drink. Disclosure also encourages businesses to comply with laws and regulations.
Inspection
During an inspection, the NVWA checks whether a business complies with legal food safety requirements. The inspector looks at food handling, allergen information for non-prepackaged food, hygiene, and pest control. The business in question then receives one of three final assessments: compliant, points for improvement identified, or intensified supervision.
The expansion concerns the assessment of food safety inspections at businesses registered with the Chamber of Commerce with one of these SBI codes:
