The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has seized 70,000 bottles of banned liquids for refilling vapes from an importer in Gelderland. The liquids have sweet flavors and are therefore not allowed to be sold in our country. The importer did so anyway and will receive an administrative fine. The bottles will be destroyed at his expense.
It is prohibited in the Netherlands to sell vapes and e-liquids with any flavor other than tobacco. This ban also applies to specially developed liquids that allow consumers to add a sweet flavor to a neutral vape liquid. Because inspectors had indications that the importer was not complying with the ban, they checked his stock in a warehouse in South Holland. They found about 200 boxes containing bottles of liquids with flavors like strawberry, watermelon, and lemonade.
Working Together
By producing, importing, and selling vapes and refills with sweet flavors, producers, importers, and sellers make prohibited products available that are particularly attractive to young people. Vapes are addictive and harmful to health. Through supervision and enforcement, the NVWA contributes to limiting the availability of tobacco and vapes for young people. This supports the goal of the National Prevention Agreement, which aims for a smoke-free generation by 2040.
To reduce the use of vapes among young people, besides enforcement, education for young people and their parents is of great importance. It is essential to tackle this social problem together and protect young people from these attractive but highly addictive and harmful products. Therefore, the campaign “No to Vaping” is underway.
