The NVWA has investigated 29 websites that offer products made from horse or donkey milk. Of these, 24 used prohibited medical claims and health claims that are not allowed for food products. Companies making prohibited claims received an official warning or a fine. They were also required to immediately adjust the texts on their websites.
Some dietary supplements and drinks contain horse milk and donkey milk. Most of the websites investigated by the NVWA claim health benefits of these products. For example, it was claimed that these products can cure and prevent symptoms of psoriasis, eczema, allergies, and corona. Such medical claims are not allowed for food products.
Some statements that suggest a positive relationship between the food product and health are allowed. These health claims must be approved by the European Union (EU). The claim must then be scientifically substantiated and must not be misleading.
Follow-up Approach
The NVWA will check in the coming months whether the companies are now complying with the rules. If they do not resolve the violations, the NVWA can impose stricter measures such as higher fines.
