Avian influenza has been detected at a broiler parent stock farm in Gasselternijveenschemond (municipality of Aa en Hunze, province of Drenthe). To prevent the spread of the virus, approximately 71,000 animals at the location will be culled by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). This is the first infection since March of this year. Within the 3-kilometer zone, there are 6 other poultry farms being screened by the NVWA. Additionally, there are 25 other commercial poultry farms within the 10-kilometer restriction zone around the infected location.
Measures in the 10 km restriction zone
A transport ban applies immediately throughout the 10-kilometer zone. This means that no poultry and hatching and consumption eggs may be transported from locations with birds in this zone. There is also a ban on the removal of manure from birds and used bedding, as well as for other animals and animal products from farms with birds. These measures are necessary to prevent the spread to other parts of the country.
