Ladies and gentlemen,
Im delighted to join you on this very special anniversary, even from a distance!
The Ancona Declaration,
a landmark document adopted 25 years ago,
was set to promote regional cooperation and integration in the Adriatic-Ionic Region.
And it has done so!
The Declaration recognised the importance of efficient transport networks
in fostering economic growth,
social development
and environmental sustainability.
Thanks to stronger links between our countries,
we have unlocked new opportunities in trade and tourism,
and no less important,
in cultural exchanges.
The Ancona Declaration paved the way
for the European Unions Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region.
Since then, we improved maritime connections,
developed green corridors,
and modernised the regions airport and port infrastructure.
The macro-regional approach
has allowed us to identify synergies and opportunities to create networks,
and to ensure consistency and complementarity
between national projects.
There is no better way than this
to improve resource use,
avoid overlaps
and generally increase impact.
And we have made significant progress on transport infrastructure
in the Adriatic and Ionian Region over the last two decades.
But there is a ‘but, as I know you were expecting!
Challenges remain!
We lack a comprehensive transport network,
and this restricts the movement of people, goods, and services.
Going forward, we need continued investment in transport infrastructure,
and to prioritise projects that will close identified gaps.
As we continue working together to unlock the full potential of the regions transport links,
we need a coordinated approach,
bringing together governments, international organisations, and the private sector.
By pooling our collective resources and expertise,
we can create a transport network that is modern, efficient, and environmentally sustainable.
The recent entry into force of the revised TEN-T Regulation
has given us legal framework,
infrastructure standards
and deadlines for implementation.
It also established the European Transport Corridors and the European Maritime Space.
Both will improve connections between our countries,
reducing travel times and increasing economic competitiveness.
As I see it,
the Ancona Declaration has been a catalyst for cooperation and development in our region,
thanks in large part
to its focus on transport links.
So on this 25th anniversary,
I would like to reaffirm my commitment to strengthening connectivity,
and I hope that you will join me.
Thank you.
