Background

On 18 December 2024, Parliament established a Special Committee on the Housing Crisis in the European Union to put forward solutions for decent, sustainable, and affordable housing for all EU citizens. It has been tasked with mapping housing needs, analysing existing policies across the EU and contributing to the future implementation of the EU’s affordable housing plan.

On 9 February 2026, the Special Committee adopted its final recommendations, which include the need to boost investment through EU, national and private funds, to reduce red tape in the housing sector, and to tackle labour shortages and competitiveness challenges in the construction and sector. The committee report is now scheduled for a vote in plenary on 10 March 2026.
