His Majesty the King will open the renovated museum The Spinozahuis in Rijnsburg on Wednesday, April 8. The museum showcases the life and ideas of philosopher Baruch Spinoza. He moved into the house in 1661 and worked there on his Ethics, a philosophical work about God, nature, reason, and emotions.

The King unveils a memorial incorporating Spinozas seal. He then tours the museum and speaks with volunteers, board members, and organizations involved with Spinozas philosophy.

The new permanent exhibition includes an introductory film with video testimonies from both friends and opponents of the philosopher. Spinoza himself comes to life in videos about Ethics and the Theological-Political Treatise, a book in which Spinoza advocates for democracy and freedom of expression.
The Spinozahuis contains authentic seventeenth-century objects, such as a wooden lens grinder that Spinoza used for scientific research. In the reconstructed library are the books Spinoza owned, provided with digital explanations.

Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677), son of a Portuguese fruit merchant, grew up in Jewish Amsterdam. His critical attitude towards Jewish traditions and religious laws led to his expulsion from the Jewish community. He continued his work in Rijnsburg.
