Residents of Amersfoort with a net monthly income up to 150% of the social assistance standard, and their children living at home aged between 12 and 18 years, can participate in the offer again in 2026.

Last year there was more interest than expected, and the subsidy ceiling of 3,300 subscriptions was even adjusted midterm. In total, 4,400 free public transport subscriptions were issued during the campaign period from April 1 to October 1, 2025.

For Nadya Aboyaakoub-Akkouh, alderman for work, income and poverty policy, and Tyas Bijlholt, alderman for mobility, the goal of the campaign has been achieved. “We wanted to ensure that residents with fewer financial means can participate in social activities and have an alternative to the car. That appears to be the case and is reason for us to extend the campaign by one year.”

To measure the effects among participants of the previous campaign, the municipality conducted a survey. Of the 2,822 respondents, 988 participants completed the questionnaire. They indicated they travel more often by public transport (82%), find it easier to attend important appointments (83%), and also visit family and friends more often (76%). Additionally, 16% said that they would not have made some trips at all without the free public transport, especially to family/friends and for groceries.
