Who doesnt know it: the 1,140-meter-long car tunnel under the IJ that connects the center of Amsterdam with Amsterdam North. Queen Juliana opened the IJ tunnel on October 30, 1968. After years of faithful service, it is due for renovation. This means the tunnel will be closed for an extended period starting mid-2027. We want to prepare you well and are happy to discuss the inconvenience and possible solutions with you.

Among other things, the monitoring and security system, ventilation, lighting, and asphalt will be replaced. This way, we keep the tunnel safe and ready for the future.

Discussion about inconvenience and solutions

The closure will cause extra congestion and detours in the city. To minimize the inconvenience as much as possible, we are already organizing information meetings for residents, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders. During these meetings, we explain the work, answer questions, and discuss customized solutions, such as adjusted working hours, alternative routes, or reorganizing travel movements. We also use the experiences gained from the renovation of the Piet Heintunnel.

Tunnel remains open for emergency services

During the closure, the tunnel remains open for emergency and rescue services.

We organize information meetings at multiple locations in the neighborhoods around the IJ tunnel. If the meeting in your neighborhood does not suit you, you are of course welcome at another meeting.
