The Municipality of Arnhem will invest in a major renewal of Immerloo II in the coming years. A new Heart of Immerloo will be created, bringing together education, sports, health, housing, and community. The renewal will take place in phases over several years, with the first renewal, a new school, expected to open around 2029.
Paul Smeulders, Alderman for Housing: “Immerloo is the poorest postal code area in the Netherlands. We want children growing up here to have the same opportunities as all other children in Arnhem. That is why we will invest heavily in the neighborhood in the coming years, starting with a beautiful new school, more facilities, good housing, and greener public spaces. I am proud that we are putting so much effort into this, as it helps young people grow up safely here, seniors to live comfortably, and families to build a future in their own neighborhood.”
Ready for the Future
With these plans, the municipality aims to make the neighborhood future-proof. Several facilities in Immerloo II are outdated, and some public spaces are unsafe or too focused on car traffic. At the same time, there is a great need for housing and good facilities in Arnhem. By tackling the areas development in an integrated way, the municipality wants to improve livability and give the neighborhood a clear boost.
New Heart of Immerloo
The new Heart of Immerloo will include a new school with childcare and toddler care and a new gym with space for youth work. At the same time, possibilities for a health center are being explored. The central square will be car-restricted and will serve as an important meeting place for residents of all ages. Work is also underway to improve the cycling connection between Huissen and Arnhem.
In addition, new homes will be built in the area, and public spaces will be made greener and safer. Because Immerloo has a high percentage of social rental housing, the municipality focuses mainly on affordable owner-occupied homes. They also want to build social rental homes specifically for seniors. With this, Arnhem aims to stimulate housing turnover and ensure more variety in the neighborhood so that different groups of residents can continue to live comfortably here.
Participate in the Plans
Residents and social partners have already been involved in making the plans in recent times. The municipality will continue to actively involve them in further elaboration in the next phases. A plan will be drawn up allowing residents to contribute ideas about the design of their neighborhood.
