The Municipality of Eindhoven has awarded the concession for shared two-wheelers in Eindhoven to umob. On Thursday, March 5, the booking platform will start as the responsible mobility service, making all shared two-wheelers accessible through one app.

With this award, the Municipality of Eindhoven is the first Dutch municipality to choose a model with four different types of shared vehicles via one contracting party, one point of contact, and one management layer. Umob, in turn, manages the executing parties. These are the already experienced market parties Dott (e-bikes and bicycles) and felyx (e-scooters) in Eindhoven. Cargoroo by MOBY (cargo bikes) also joins the consortium. As the main contractor, umob is fully responsible for matters such as managing subcontractors, insight into figures, performance control, pricing, communication, and user experience.

Central management and recognizability

All vehicles within the concession are provided with a uniform appearance and can be used directly via the umob app through a QR code. This creates a clear and recognizable shared mobility system that contributes to trust, ease of use, and accessibility. In the future, shared vehicles can only be picked up and parked at the 500 hubs in the city that will be rolled out in phases.

With this collaboration, we ensure an affordable, reliable, and city-wide network of shared mobility. With shared mobility hubs within walking distance and good agreements on vehicle availability at the hubs, we ensure that users can trust that a shared vehicle is available when they need it, says alderman Robert Strijk (Mobility) of the Municipality of Eindhoven.

The long-term vision is a scalable system that can grow from Eindhoven to the broader Brainport region, with one recognizable MaaS platform as a digital gateway. The concession has a duration of 11 years and offers room for joint development.

Affordable shared mobility

The concession prioritizes the end user, focusing on availability and affordability. The Municipality of Eindhoven has made financial resources available in this procurement for good availability, reliable vehicles, and to make the offer more affordable for users. The rate for a regular bike is 1.50 euros for the first 30 minutes, for an electric bike 2.50 euros for the first 20 minutes. To encourage use, users receive a 50% discount on rides with electric shared bikes and scooters in the first month.

For users, this means a uniform travel platform for all shared two-wheelers in Eindhoven. Via the umob app, they can search, book, ride, and pay without redirects to other apps. Everything works from the same trusted environment, with a fixed payment method and central customer service. This makes shared mobility not only smarter organized but especially more accessible and user-friendly for everyone, says Bibi Jorissen, CEO of umob.

500 hubs

The new concession builds on an already active and locally proven operation. Dott and felyx, with e-bikes and e-scooters, have been active in Eindhoven for years and have local teams and maintenance depots. In addition, Cargoroo by MOBY will start with at least 30 electric shared cargo bikes that will be placed in the coming period, and from September Dott will place at least 170 extra regular shared bikes.

The 500 hubs provide fixed and logical parking locations for the shared vehicles and thus prevent illegal parking. In addition, efforts are made to prevent illegal parking through proactive redistribution of vehicles and operational teams on the street.
