The Municipality of Haarlemmermeer has presented the Haarlemmermeer Youth Research 2025 to the municipal council. The study is titled ‘The world at your feet and as a burden on your shoulders’. It shows how children, youth, and young adults are doing in our municipality.
Many young people feel well
Thousands of children, youth, and young adults participated in the study. Many of them indicate that they are doing well: they enjoy going to school, often feel happy, and spend their free time on enjoyable activities. This is a positive picture. At the same time, the study also shows concerns. Bullying occurs more frequently and not all young people feel safe. Additionally, many young adults experience difficulty finding their own housing and report feeling more often stressed or gloomy. Much is happening to them, putting pressure on their mental health.
Alderman Marjolein Steffens – van de Water: “The well-being of children and youth has been close to my heart for many years. Many young people in Haarlemmermeer are doing well, but we also see that some deal with stress and gloomy feelings. Together with the network around children and youth, we are building a strong foundation on which every child and young person feels seen, supported, and heard. An environment where they feel safe, can develop, and look to the future with confidence.”
Municipalitys commitment
The municipality continues to commit to a safe and healthy living environment for children and youth. The research results have been used as a basis for youth policy and the further elaboration of the implementation program, in cooperation with parents, schools, sports clubs, general practitioners, social work, and many other stakeholders.
More explanation for the council
In June 2025, the municipal council already received the results of the Youth Survey. These were also used to formulate the Preventive Youth Policy 2025–2030 ‘Strong from the Start’. The full Youth Research provides additional explanation and depth. The municipality offers the council an informative meeting to clarify the results.
