Today, Alderman for Urban Development Frans Bastiaens and Marjorie Jans, Director of Transactions & Projects at the Government Real Estate Agency (Rijksvastgoedbedrijf, RVB), signed the sales agreement for the site at Noormannensingel 50. This marks an important step closer to the arrival of the new courthouse in Maastricht.
Why new construction?
The new location at Noormannensingel offers sustainable accommodation for the new courthouse in Maastricht, with a central location near the station. The building will therefore be optimally accessible for employees and visitors of both institutions. The current courthouse in St. Annadal is not suitable for the long term for the Limburg Court and the Public Prosecution Service Limburg (OM). Renovation with modernization is also not an option because the costs would be higher than new construction.
Alderman for Urban Development, Frans Bastiaens: “The relocation of the courthouse to Maastricht-East is an important contribution to our area vision of the Spoorzone and the further qualitative development of Maastricht as the provincial capital. The Station Quarter will, with the courthouse, the development on the Vikingsite and the ‘Cour’ project, grow into a lively district where it is pleasant to live in the relatively short term.” There will also be space for business and high-quality services, Euregio institutions and innovation.
Next phase
The signing of the sales agreement for the site marks the beginning of the next phase in the realization of the new courthouse for the RVB and Municipality of Maastricht. In the coming period, the plans will be further developed, necessary studies conducted, and the required permits prepared and applied for.
One of the most important matters to be implemented in the short term is a participation process with residents and entrepreneurs from the area. The RVB is deploying an environment manager to shape this process together with the municipality. Once the land is officially transferred, the RVB can begin preparing the site for construction and demolishing the current building. The completion of the new building is scheduled for the end of 2032.
What else is happening in Maastricht-East?
Across from the new courthouse – the former KPN site – a large-scale residential development is being realized, including an underground parking garage and space for offices, small-scale hospitality and neighborhood functions. The official starting shot for this will be given on February 5 by the Municipality of Maastricht and the project developer. This plan fits perfectly with the ambition of qualitative growth from the 2040 Environmental Vision City up close with a view to creating broad prosperity.
Maximum space in a compact city
The developments around Noormannensingel are a reason for the Municipality of Maastricht to also tackle public space, with attention to qualitative and functional greenery and traffic situation. On February 24, 2026, a broad information meeting will take place about the various developments in Maastricht Central-East. Further information will follow soon.
