The Design Museum Den Bosch remains at its current location in the Museum Quarter. This was clearly shown in a joint study with the province, the Design Museum Den Bosch, and the Noordbrabants Museum. All parties involved support this choice, which feels like a logical and good step for the future.
Why the museum stays at the current location
Based on the discussions held, Design Museum Den Bosch has indicated it wants to remain in the Museum Quarter. Earlier research was conducted into existing alternative locations in and around the city center of ’s-Hertogenbosch. No promising options emerged from this. Furthermore, new construction at a location other than the Citadelpoort requires a large investment, which is currently considered unrealistic.
Plans for the future
Design Museum Den Bosch aims to further develop into a museum of national significance. To achieve this, the museum wants to investigate how the building can be better utilized and whether modifications are necessary. Only when these plans are clear will it be considered whether expansion is possible and desirable. This also includes a thorough cost-benefit analysis. The Noordbrabants Museum also wants to continue developing and is further elaborating its own vision. The province is the main partner in this, but the municipality remains involved as well.
Steps currently being taken
The parties have agreed on three follow-up steps:
- Further elaboration of the future plans of the Design Museum Den Bosch, fitting the current location.
- Sharpening the vision of the Noordbrabants Museum, with coordination between the museum, province, and municipality.
- A brief exploration by the municipality and province of what is spatially possible within the Museum Quarter. This will first look at better utilization of existing spaces.
Next steps
A decision about the possible repurchase of the building at Mortel 4 is postponed for now. First, the parties want to know exactly what the museums need and which plans are feasible. The intention is to carry out the follow-up steps as soon as possible, preferably before the end of the second quarter. It is known that the upcoming municipal elections may still influence this.
