Speaker Thom van Campen will swear in eleven new Members of Parliament on Wednesday, 25 February. They succeed members who have taken positions in the Jetten cabinet. The swearing-in can be followed live from approximately 10:15 via Debat Direct.

Now that the Jetten cabinet has been sworn in, ten Members of Parliament have left the House to take positions in the new cabinet. Additionally, a seat became vacant after the departure of Nathalie van Berkel (D66) on 17 February. The eleven vacated seats are taken by candidates who were on the election list for the elections of 29 October 2025. The Electoral Council officially notifies these persons of their appointment. They then inform the Electoral Council whether they accept their appointment.

Swearing-in new Members of Parliament

The House of Representatives decides on the admission of the persons appointed by the Electoral Council. After general elections, the House in its old composition decides on this. In the case of a midterm vacancy, as in this case, the sitting House decides. The decision of the House is prepared by the Committee for the Examination of Credentials.

Credentials

The new Members of Parliament provide an extract from the population register to the House and indicate whether they have ‘public positions’, such as a job or administrative function. These statements together are called credentials. The credentials are examined by the Committee for the Examination of Credentials of the House of Representatives. The committee reports on this prior to the swearing-in in the plenary session.

Oath or promise

The swearing-in of new Members of Parliament takes place in the plenary hall. At the start of exercising political and administrative functions, officeholders must recite a legally prescribed text: an oath or declaration and promise. Each Member of Parliament takes the oath or declaration and promise at the swearing-in.

Follow live

The swearing-in of the new Members of Parliament can be followed from 10:15 via Debat Direct. Afterwards, Prime Minister Rob Jetten will deliver the government statement in the House and present the new cabinet. This is followed by a debate on the government statement.
