On Wednesday, January 21, the House of Representatives will debate violence against police officers and emergency workers, and the increase in antisocial behavior in society. You can follow the debate live from 3:30 PM via Debat Direct.

For the debate, the Minister of Justice and Security, Foort van Oosten, will come to the House of Representatives.

Approach to Violence

The debate was requested last May by Member of Parliament Ingrid Michon-Derkzen (VVD). The reason included news that in 2024 violence against officers was used about 12,000 times. Shortly after, the House received a letter from then Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel about the approach to violence. In it, he wrote among other things: There is certainly no such thing as a violence-free society in 2025, and in some areas, such as the increasing number of attacks with explosives and online threats, there is cause for concern. The cabinet attaches great importance to a strong approach to violent crime. The intentions from the letter will also be discussed during the debate.
