The Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO) took place from Thursday, 19 February to Saturday, 21 February in Aruba. Topics such as the geopolitical situation, financial relations within the Kingdom, connectivity between the islands, aging population, and climate adaptation were on the agenda during this semi-annual meeting of the delegations of the Parliaments of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.

The discussions were led by the chair of the Committee for Kingdom Relations of the House of Representatives, MP Songül Mutluer (GL-PvdA). Other participants from the House of Representatives included members Heera Dijk (D66), Elmar Vlottes (PVV), Tijs van den Brink (CDA), Annabel Nanninga (JA21), and Don Ceder (Christian Union). 

Increasing unrest

The Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation officially began on Thursday, 19 February with opening speeches and presentations on recent developments per country. This was followed by a technical briefing from Lieutenant Colonel Tim van Wijk. He spoke on behalf of the Kingdom government about the current security situation in the Caribbean region. In the past six months, there has been increasing unrest in the region: US attacks on alleged drug transports by sea and the uncertain situation in Venezuela.

Aviation

On Friday, 20 February, the delegations discussed the future of aviation, the interconnectedness of the countries in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, cybersecurity, climate adaptation, and the consequences of aging for elderly care and support. The delegations also visited Arubas airport, where they were informed about the modernization and expansion of the complex.

Press conference

The IPKO concluded on Saturday, 21 February with the adoption and signing of the list of agreements by the chairpersons of the Parliaments of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten and the delegation leader from the Netherlands. Afterwards, the delegation leaders held a joint press conference.

Working visit

The Dutch delegation began several working visits on Aruba on Wednesday, 18 February, prior to the IPKO. They visited the refinery in Aruba, which will be dismantled, and discussed energy transition and cybersecurity.
