Prof. Bartels will be part of the civil law section. Ms. Sinnige will be part of the criminal law section.
Prof. Bartels is a professor of civil law at Radboud University Nijmegen and previously was a professor of property law and notarial law at Utrecht University. He has also served as a substitute judge at the Court of Appeal in ’s-Hertogenbosch and as a substitute judge in the Gelderland District Court. Ms. Sinnige is already a deputy advocate general at the Supreme Court. Previously, she worked as a judge at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal and as a judge in the Midden-Nederland District Court.
Advocates general work in the Public Prosecution Service at the Supreme Court and provide advice to the judicial body of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands. These so-called conclusions are significant legal opinions in cases pending before the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is the highest court in civil, criminal, and tax matters. As the highest court, the Supreme Court can rule on judicial decisions that are subject to cassation. The Supreme Court assesses whether the law has been applied correctly, whether the correct procedures have been followed, and whether a ruling has been adequately and understandably substantiated.
